PRT MANUAL: How to Teach Pivotal Behaviors to Children with Autism
The Pivotal Response Treatment manual addresses the subject of pivotal behaviors, such as motivation, which are behaviors that are central to a wide area of behaviors, such that positive changes in the pivotal behavior produce widespread positive effects on many other behaviors, including often times disruptive behavior.

FIRST WORDS MANUAL
Teaching First Words to Children With Autism and Communication Delays Using Pivotal Response Training
Describes Pivotal Response Teaching procedures as they apply to children with autism or related severe communication delays learning their first words. The manual focuses specifically on the pivotal area of motivation in children as they learn their first words and learn to use them spontaneously and independently.

Designed to help teach those who work with children with autism how to facilitate play dates with typically developing peers. This manual is intended to be easy for families and professionals to use in home and community settings. It outlines simple steps for setting up play dates with peers and promoting positive interactions during play dates.

PRIMING MANUAL: Increasing Success in School Through Priming
Intended for parents and educators to help a child with a disability who is included in a regular education classroom to acquire new academic material with more ease and thus also to help reduce disruptive behavior.

PROBLEM BEHAVIOR MANUAL: Understanding Why Problem Behaviors Occur: A Guide for Assisting Parents in Assessing Causes of Behavior and Designing Treatment Plans
Instructs reader on how to perform a functional analysis, that is, how to recognize the function of the behavior that an individual is displaying, and how to use that information to modify the behavior to one that is appropriate and no longer disruptive.

SELF-MANAGEMENT MANUAL: How to Teach Self-Management to People w/ Severe Disabilities
Intended to help people who interact with individuals with severe disabilities maximize those individual's opportunities to be successful in their daily activities in integrated community settings, such as school programs and other community environments where constant supervision is not possible.

NEW! SOCIALIZATION MANUAL : Procedures for Working with Paraprofessionals to Improve Socialization for Children with Autism
Intended for those who are interested in expanding on the existing in-home services for families by creating a program to increase the social opportunities for children with autism or related disabilities in inclusive settings, including after-school and summer camp programs. This manual outlines the recruitment and training of paraprofessionals to assist with social interventions, such that children with autism or related disabilities can gain access and successfully integrate into community settings and programs.

PARENT-PROFESSIONAL MANUAL: A Model for Parent- Professional Collaboration
Outlines the elements of an effective partnership between parents and professionals for creating a successful program for a child with autism.

TOILET TRAINING MANUAL: Toilet Training for Children with Severe Handicaps: A Field Manual for Coordinating Training Procedures Across Multiple Community Settings
Outlines the steps to a toilet training program which has been proven to be successful with children with disabilities over very short time periods.

ABOUT BMSO

The Behavior Management Student Organization consists of students in the Counseling/ Clinical/ School psychology program and the Educational Psychology program who are affiliated with the Koegel Autism Research Center. The main objective of the organization lies in the dissemination of information regarding well-researched, state-of-the-art behavior management approaches to help individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities. This information is primarily available through training manuals geared towards parents, teachers, and other professionals. The manuals provide easy to follow instructions and examples of implementing the treatment methods. The organization also disseminates reprints of articles published by Dr. Robert L. Koegel, Dr. Lynn Kern Koegel, and students affilitated with the Koegel Autism Research Center. Reprints of articles can be ordered via e-mail (autism@education.ucsb.edu) or fax (805-893-2658) and cost $1.50 per reprint.

The Behavior Management Student Organization also provides information to parents and other individuals through co-sponsoring national conferences. These are helpful to some parents, for example, who live in other states and do not have immediate access to specialized treatment centers. Another service available to parents is direct training at the Koegel Autism Research Center. Parents travel to the center to receive hands-on training in the treatment procedures, which is provided by advanced doctoral students.
