CECIMS, located in the Gevirtz
Graduate School of Education, was established in 1990 with the goal of improving
mathematics and science education for all students by:
- Helping transform educational
institutions into ones that are student-centered and meet the needs of underrepresented
groups;
- Enabling teachers to
provide mathematics and science programs that are meaningful and relevant
to the culture and experience of all students;
- Providing students the
opportunity to understand, appreciate the significance of, and enjoy doing
mathematics and science;
- Increasing administrative,
parent and community understanding of and support for reform in mathematics
and science;
- Addressing how race,
class, gender and other forms of bias affect learning and teaching.
